Sts Two brothers, both Christian saints: Cyril 826869 and Methodius 815885. Born in Thessalonica, they were sent as missionaries to what is today Moravia. They invented a Slavonic alphabet, and translated the Bible and the liturgy from Greek to Slavonic. The language (known as Old Church Slavonic) remained in use in churches and for literature among Bulgars, Serbs, and Russians up to the 17th century. The cyrillic alphabet is named for Cyril and may also have been invented by him. Feast day 14 Feb.
