Inver, (latinski naziv Ziniber Officinale) je dugogodišnja biljka koja je kao začin, lek i afrodizijak poznata u jugoističnoj Aziji još od pre 3000 godina. Muslimani ga smatraju svetom biljkom, pa se zbog te osobine pominje u Kuranu. Za njegu su znali i stari Grci i Rimljani. U srednjem veku bio je jedan od najpoznatijih začina i jedan od onih zbog kojih je došlo do otkrića Amerike.

ir je čvrst koren, bež boje, gladak i sjajan. Ima oblik ljudske šake sa nepravilnim kvrgastim prstima. Prilično je ljut i kiselkast. Osušen i samleven u prah ima žuto-mrku boju, jak miris i veoma je pikantan. Đumbir u prahu treba kupovati u malim količina jer brzo izvetri.
