'absinthe' to english lexicon

absinthe

{noun}{culinary}IPA: / ˈabsɪnθ /

Liqueur flavored with wormwood.
Green liqueur containing 60–80% alcohol and made with anise. It was originally flavored with oil of wormwood, which, because it attacks the nervous system, is widely banned, so substitutes are now used.
Absinthe was made in Switzerland in the 18th century, and in 1805 the Pernod family in France set up in business to manufacture it commercially. By 1910, 20 million liters of absinthe was consumed annually, and many crimes were attributed to its effects; it was banned in Switzerland in 1907, in the US 1912, and in France after 1918.
